First Graders Learn About Safety

First grade students were presented with two safety lessons during the month of October.
During National Fire Prevention Week, Crete firefighters, Jack Oelschlager, Marty Urbanek, and Jordon Lampila, were guests at Crete Elementary School. First grade students learned what to do to escape from a fire. They learned about fire safety in general, and how and why to stay low and crawl underneath the smoke. After the lesson, students were given the chance to see and learn about the special equipment a firefighter must wear to stay safe while fighting and putting out fires.
On Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, Sheriff, Rich Zimmerman was invited to school to share safety tips on how to have a fun, yet safe Halloween. He gave the students tips on safety in general, such as don’t go up to, or talk to strangers, as well as safety tips for those children who would be trick-or treating. After the presentation, students were given baseball type cards with pictures of Saline’s K-Nine unit.
