The Crete Public Schools are located in Crete, Nebraska, which is nestled in the Blue River Valley 23 miles southwest of Lincoln. This ideal location is close to a large metropolitan city and state's largest university, yet rural in nature. The community of Crete is growing and now includes over 6,000 residents as well as a thriving business atmosphere. The city recently opened the doors to a new state of the art hospital. The area maintains a large number of grain and livestock farming operations. However, the major industries would include; Nestle Purina Pet Care, Crete Mills, and Farmland Foods. The Crete School District has over 1465 students with 139 certified staff members and 106 support staff personnel. The District is the 27th largest in the state. It supports a diverse population with an excellent reputation for quality education. This past year students scored higher than the state average at the 4th, 8th, and 11th grades on assessments in both reading and mathematics. Crete Schools have also been recognized at the state level for scoring at above average levels on the state writing test. Much of the success of these test scores can be attributed to a strong commitment by the district to professional development and district-wide use of the six-trait writing model. Year after year our students excel in all levels of academic achievement.
Technology in our schools has been exceptional. There is an average of more than four computers for each teacher in the district. Currently the buildings contain six computer labs, a distance learning classroom, a portable distance learning lab, high-speed Internet connection, email addresses for all certified staff, and a network that serves a variety of needs throughout the district.
A wide variety of curriculum and programming opportunities exist for students. These include: quality special education and enrichment programs, ELL, All-Stars, TeamMates, and a foreign language curriculum that serves students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Crete also supports and encourages a wide range of activities that include: sports, speech, band, chorus, FFA, FBLA, FSA, and many others. The school district consistently qualifies for the football playoffs and has been the Class B State Football Champion for the past 2 years. The speech team has won or been runner-up in the conference tournament the past six years and the choral and band programs consistently score at the superior level at district competitions. Many students obtain Academic All-State status. Last year's graduating class of over 90 students was honored with over one million dollars in scholarship offers.
The community of Crete strongly supports the educational system of the Crete Public Schools. Voters approved the building of a new middle school with a 77% majority. Construction on the building was completed in July 2004 and the doors were open for the 2004-2005 school year. With a growing population, the School District is looking to the future to provide the best opportunities for students.
