Statewide Reading Test Results
by Valorie Foy
August 25, 2010
Crete Public School students in grades 3-8 and 11 participated in the statewide reading test, which was administered for the first time in Nebraska during the spring of 2010. The test is identical at each grade level for all students in Nebraska.
All districts seek to have 100% of their students master reading. Public schools in Nebraska continue to be placed within the top 10 of almost every national educational measure. Crete students placed near or above the state average in most grades.
During the next month, administrators and teachers will analyze the results of the reading test to enhance instruction for all students. A first review of the data received last week demonstrates students generally performing higher in comprehension items than vocabulary. Crete students showed strength in responding to narrative text but demonstrated need for improvement in working with word structure to determine meaning of words.

CPS teachers have been refining the language arts/reading curriculum the past two years to provide a strong correlation to Nebraska State Reading Standards. Not all children enter school or enroll in classes able to read at the expected grade level. Students above level at the elementary and middle school are placed in advanced classes. Students struggling in reading are provided extra time during the school day, after school, and in the summer.
Individual test results will be sent home to parents of third and fourth graders in the Thursday packet on August 26th. The middle school and high school will mail similar information with progress reports the first week in September. The new state test does display several positive aspects about the reading proficiency of Crete students. It also points to areas for improvement. However, the expectation is to make continuous growth until 100% of our children are reading appropriately. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher and/or principal if you have questions.
