Dia de los Muertos: Art Exhibition at Doane University
A number of ESL students from the Special Programs of Crete Public Schools designed and recreated one of the most important representations from the Latin American Culture. When you take a look at this altar for the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), you will see how we honor our loved ones and how we keep them in our hearts.
All of this started when Jared List, one of the Spanish Professors from Doane University, talked to the ESL students and asked for help with his Latin American Studies Class. His students needed to interview a number of people from different Latin countries, some ESL students and other members of the community agreed to help. Doane students needed information on Latin Culture, Religion, Traditions, Food, Music and more.
After the interviews, the ladies made the decision to set up an altar for “El Dia de los Muertos” to show a little bit of what they described during the interviews. The altar was be on display at the Perry Center in Doane University from October 30th to November 2nd and was open to the public.
Mariana, Teresa, Amelia, Maria, Yesica, Nely, Lucero, MariaRuth, Maricela, Hilda, Jenny, Dan Jared, Monique, and Wilma worked together to make this possible in a great collaboration between Doane University, Crete Public Schools Special Programs - ESL students, and community members. Thank you to all of the participants in this wonderful example of collaboration and community.
