For several years, the Crete FBLA chapter has organized an annual Career Field Trip for  members to learn more about careers available and colleges in Nebraska.  On the morning of Wednesday, September 13th, 2017 thirty-six members and the adviser toured Assurity Life Insurance Company in Lincoln. This tour was facilitated by FBLA Treasurer Haylee F.’s father, Kevin, who works at Assurity.

At Assurity, students learned more about life insurance company business operations, what careers are available, and what students can do to work there in the future. Students enjoyed the tour of the LEED Certified building and saw many departments. Students were excited to learn the President and CEO of Assurity, Tom Henning, graduated from Crete High School. Additionally, he was a part of the local and state chapters FBLA during his time in Crete High School. Students were able to go into his office and chat with him about FBLA and the ways it benefitted him. Claire E. junior and current Parliamentarian,  stated, “Visiting Assurity was a great experience to get to see what I could be looking for in a future workplace. It offered a great work environment and made me very excited for my future.”

Next, students toured and ate lunch at the Student Union on campus at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After lunch, the FBLA members met up with a few Crete High School graduates and former FBLA members including past presidents Roni Miller and Lindsay Turner. Members saw what it was like outside classrooms between classes and saw Love Library and the old College of Business Administration.

The UNL College of Business (COB) was the first stop for the afternoon tour.  The $87 million building was just opened in August of 2017.  COB Admission representative Mark Davis shared the number of majors and opportunities available at the College of Business. Students were able to listen to PBL members talk about how to get involved in FBLA in college.  “I am really thankful that as an FBLA chapter we visited the new College of Business at UNL. It’s so fascinating to learn about the school and how different majors will prepare us for the future,” said Summer L., a sophomore attending this trip for the first time.

Members that attended the FBLA Career Field Trip learned a lot about the importance of making career and college choices.  Crete FBLA members will be busy with several other activities this fall including Fall Leadership Conference, Great Pumpkin Festival, National Fall Leadership Conference in St. Louis, concession stands, and Breakfast with Santa planning.
