Mock Crisis Drill

by Kyle McGowan, Superintendent

July 23, 2010

The school is very appreciative of the many partnerships with organizations around the community.  Crete has a particularly strong emergency response network which has benefited the district on several occasions over the years.  School personnel meet throughout the year with representatives from law enforcement, fire & rescue as well as medical professionals.  This cooperative team organized a mock crisis at the school prior to the start of the 2009-10 school year. The event actively involved each of the organizations and allowed all of us to review our emergency response processes.

Public safety is a foundational principal for any city.  We would also agree that the safety of children at school is paramount.  The district continues to have regular fire and tornado drills with students as well as practice additional safety measures.  One drill which will be added to the school routine is a lockdown procedure.  School staff members are aware of emergency lockdown practices; however, students must also be prepared.

The purpose of any safety drill is to prepare for an event which will hopefully never take place.  Practicing allows participants to become more efficient in a response.  It’s impossible to anticipate all scenarios; however, we strive to maintain the safest environment possible for our students and staff.  Mock crisis drills will continue to be organized with multi-agency involvement. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many community and staff members who regularly protect the school and support these safety efforts.
