Third Grade Studies Polar Regions

by Teresa Wissenberg

February 16, 2010

During the month of January all third grade classes entered into the deep freeze!  We studied the Polar Regions.  We learned where they are located and how they are different.  Our main emphasis was penguins.  Each student looked up information on one of the seventeen different penguins and gave a short report to their class.  We also read the literature book Mr. Popper’s Penguins, which added to the penguin humor.  The highlight of the unit was a “trip” via the long distance learning lab to the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo.  Two different keepers at the zoo showed us the types of penguins and told about how they take care of the penguins.  We got a close-up look at an African penguin, saw the baby Gentoo penguins, and we even saw feeding time at the zoo.  We were then able to ask our own questions about the penguins.  When we take our end of the year fieldtrip to the Omaha Zoo, we will be able to see all the penguins for ourselves.
