Middle School Addition

by Kyle McGowan, Superintendent

August 27, 2008

It is hard to believe that the Crete Middle School is beginning the fifth year of serving students.  The project was a long-time coming and received an unprecedented 77% approval as the public accepted the $6.38 million bond.  It’s also impressive to note that in approximately 8 more years the bond will be retired.

The design of the middle school included a plan for anticipated expansion.  The probability of continued growth in the community was discussed by the School Board and planning groups.  The solution to those discussions generally revolved around the eventual move of 5th grade to the middle school.  The school district has been budgeting funds for the past five years in anticipation of a need for an addition to the site.  Efforts to keep class sizes particularly low in the primary grades, i.e. six sections of kindergarten and first grade, has accelerated the need for more student space within the school.

Relocating approximately 120 more students to the middle and high school sites may somewhat decrease traffic congestion around the elementary; however, it will be transferred to the middle and high school area. The Crete City Council and School Board have been working together to address the increased amount of traffic.  The Council voted not to allow access to the streets of Crestline, Longwood and Evergreen.  The School Board has reviewed several remaining options and has essentially narrowed the decision.  One idea focuses on a design to widen the current south access to the middle school.  The other concept is a plan to redirect our bus entrances and parking arrangements in order to allow parent access on Iris Street.

The City and School District have jointly requested grant monies to develop sidewalks around the high school site.  Iris Street is also being refurbished in the near future and there will be an opportunity for the City to assist with some traffic control in these busy areas.  The School District and City will continue to work together to assure safe and efficient travel for our students and patrons.
