Summer Activities

May 15th at 1:45 p.m. marks the end of the school year for students; however, many more activities are scheduled for the summer break. Approximately 175 students in preschool through 5th grade will attend classes during the month of June. The school-age children will attend full-day sessions at the middle school and primarily focus on math and reading skills. I think it’s particularly impressive that attendance during summer school is excellent. Approximately 40 students in grades 6th through 12th will attend a variety of classes arranged to meet their needs. These classes may take place at the middle school, high school or alternative education site.
Many teachers and administrators will be involved in professional development activities throughout the summer beyond teaching classes. Staff members attend trainings related to their curriculum responsibilities. Teachers also use the summer to write curriculum and/or plan adjustments to their classroom needs.
Many of the school facilities continue to be used throughout June and July. Primarily the gymnasiums are utilized in addition to the summer school classrooms. The custodial staff has a tremendous responsibility of completing a deep cleaning as well as the many improvements which are planned. I had described previously the addition of a portable classroom being placed at both the elementary and middle school. Preventative maintenance is critical for schools and includes updates with our high school fire alarm system, window replacements and heating and cooling system improvements.
Everyone who has children will probably agree that the summer is filled with opportunities. The school will provide many positive activities. I hope parents have the chance to enjoy quality family time and also encourage their children to continue to expand their horizons. A good book is always a great option for a child who states, “I’m bored!” Have a great summer!
