On Tuesday, April 22nd, Crete Middle School students participated in the 7th grade culminating project for their environmental awareness interdisciplinary unit.
Approximately 400 students toured the Mobile Environmental Education Center provided by Midland Recycling. The students learned about how things we throw away do not decompose in landfills. They also learned that most municipal solid waste can be recycled. Students were taught to practice the 4 R’s of pollution prevention: reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink. Specific recycling in Nebraska, energy conservation, environmentally preferred purchasing, and water conservation also help to protect our fragile environment. Crete Middle School students came away with a new appreciation of how we dispose of our waste is affecting our surroundings and how we can minimize our carbon footprints.
