Prom

by Kyle McGowan

April 23, 2008

Prom season is in full swing.  Parents of Juniors and Seniors are well aware of the preparations taking place and the anticipation of a positive and fun event.  Recent weekend trips to Lincoln have already resulted in various “prom sightings” of beautiful dresses and well groomed young men.  Crete will celebrate the Junior Prom this Saturday and I thought the public may be interested in a few of the details.

Every school has certain traditions relating to Prom and Crete has followed somewhat of a similar pattern over the past 15 years.  The Juniors plan the event and have been collecting money in their class coffers for the past three years to subsidize the dance and food.  The Prom is only available to Crete 11th & 12th grade students and their invited guests.  This year the class has chosen not to have a formal dinner but rather hors d’oeuvres prior to a dance to be held at the Del Ray ballroom located in the Lincoln Haymarket area.  Doors open to the ballroom at
7:00 p.m. One Crete tradition is for parents to visit the dance for the first 30 minutes of the event and take all the necessary pictures and videos.  There has also been a tradition of crowning a king and queen.  This will take place at 10:00 p.m. and the dance will end at
11:30 p.m.

Many parents have worked tirelessly to organize a post-prom activity which will occur from
12:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. in Doane’s Fuhrer Fieldhouse.  The early morning party is well sponsored by many parents and is usually well attended by students.  A wide variety of fun and positive activities are scheduled and many local businesses have donated door prizes to the post-prom party.  All of us who have or had children reach the prom age are excited to see how these young people have matured.  This should be a safe and positive lifelong memory for students and the school and parents work together towards that goal.
