HS Student Council Overachievers

By Marilea Thiem

March 18, 2008

Overachievers? . . . Yep! That is the motto gracing the front of the T-shirts of the 07-08 Crete High Student Council members. And over-achieve is what they have done, raising over $1200 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Advisor Jill Conrad is the driving force behind the group, the spunky orchestrator of organized chaos. The group has raised funds through dances, Homecoming T-shirt sales, selling Valentine's, data match, spirit sticks, and raffling off an electronic device at the Homecoming game. For their efforts Crete's StuCo was honored with a thank you day at the Henry Dorley Zoo in September where the students got to meet an area youth whose wish had been granted after battling cancer.

Make-A-Wish is not the only thing on a StuCo member's radar. The students are involved with all aspects of Homecoming, leading up to the Coronation. In honor of Veteran's Day they also offered students and faculty the opportunity to write a note to a veteran or current soldier. No matter what the personal feelings regarding the war may have been, Crete High School showered the soldiers with warm wishes and hearty thank you's.

Crete High students and faculty under the direction of StuCo rallied during the Food Drive in November when they donated over 3350 items to the Blue River Food Pantry. Crete High Student Council was there in force loading and unloading the donated items.

StuCo is also in charge of Safety Week, the week before Prom, encouraging students to make wise choices and great memories of their high school experiences. A special speaker will be brought in, red ribbons reminding students to not drink will be tied to car antennas, seat belt pledges will be gathered, and safety tips will be shared throughout the week.

Student Council meets two times a month as a big group. After that each smaller group is meeting at least once a week individually working on their assigned projects. There is no slouching in this group as attendance is taken and unexcused absences will result in being removed from the council. Student Council is also responsible for setting up and cleaning up after every school sponsored dance (except for Prom) and attendance at the dance is mandatory.

Student Council also recognizes all participants in each sport and activity with a note and a treat. The also make new faculty and students feel welcome at the beginning of the year and shower the necessary parties with treats on Teacher Appreciation and Support Staff Day.

Student Council is a bee's nest of activity in any given month. Overachievers? . . . Yep! And we wouldn't want it any other way!
