Cabin Fever

by Kyle McGowan

February 26, 2008

Cabin fever can begin to affect people during the kind of weather we’ve been experiencing. The afternoon and evening of February 25th was cold and blustery; however, it would certainly have been worth everyone’s effort to enjoy a few community activities.  Dr. Jonathan Brand, Doane College President, and his wife Rachelle hosted a monthly Community Dinner at the UCC Church.  The meal was well attended and a great opportunity to make some new acquaintances.  Another option was to watch the Crete boy’s basketball team complete an impressive win over Seward during the district semi-finals.

An experience which is uncommon in most Nebraska communities was a chance to enjoy an “All-City Band Concert”.  Doane hosted an instrumental program which included bands representing 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, high school and the Doane College Wind Ensemble.  The performers were outstanding and the progression of skill demonstrated was motivational.  Most importantly, the concert was just plain fun.  Tremendous thanks should be extended to Dr. Jay Gilbert, Mrs. Jennene Anderson and Mr. Eric Fahrlander for directing the concert.  Such events take a lot of organization and communication to run successfully.  Everyone in the audience greatly appreciated their efforts as well as the exceptional skills of the student performers.

I’m certainly ready for Spring; however, Mother Nature cares little about my opinion.  A great way to beat the winter duldrums is to get out of the house.  On that note, please feel encouraged to visit the school or enjoy the many activities still taking place during this time of year.
