Students Complete Brick Mural

by Derek Spence

November 30, 2007

The first quarter is almost complete and with it comes the completion of a large mural at the elementary school.  Derek Spence teaches elementary art.  Mr. Spence received a $5800 grant from the Crete Trust Board to work with professional artist, Jay Tschetter to create a brick mural.  Mr. Tschetter is an artist that resides in Denton where his “Images in Brick” business is based.  He is famous for his brick artwork; the Iron Horse Legacy in Haymarket Park is a sampleof his skills. He was able to come to the elementary school and assist in the design and creation of the mural. Mr. Spence and Mr. Tschetter have coordinated the efforts of students in grades 3rd through 5th to create the brick mural.

The mural measures six feet tall by twelve feet wide.   Over 325 students worked on the mural.  In addition to the mural all students in grades 2nd through 5th were able to design their own brick that will be fired and then taken home.  Around 450 students participated and will have their very own brick.

The mural was recently taken down, all the bricks were numbered and drilled with holes so they are ready for firing.  The bricks are air dried for approximately two weeks and sent to Endicott to be fired.  The mural will to be installed and dedicated on the west wall of the elementary building some time in November.
