The Crete Board of Education met on September 10, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. at the Crete Administration Building at 920 Linden Avenue for their regular meeting. Board members present were Dennis Isernhagen, Tom King, Laura Ebke, Kim Buser, and Bill Lorenz. Absent: Matt Hanson. Also present were Superintendent Kyle McGowan, Principals Tim Conway, Kim Jacobson, and Bret Schroder, Assistant Principal Diane Bruha, and Curriculum Director Valorie Foy and interested members of the community.
The meeting, having been duly preceded by advance notice, was called to order by Vice President Lorenz at 6:30 p.m.
Motion #101-07 Laura Ebke moved to approve the following consent items--minutes of the August meetings, General Fund Claims in the amount of $297,824.80, and the monthly financial reports. Dennis Isernhagen seconded the motion. On roll call: Voting Aye: Isernhagen, Ebke, Buser, King, Lorenz. Voting Nay: None. Absent: Hanson. Motion carried: 5-0.
Kyle McGowan shared a thank you from the Hallam Park Committee for the playground equipment. Jeff Renn, Terry Rue, and Shirley Brandenburgh have been hired. Dawn Wohl resigned. The school received $600 from the Knights of Columbus for use with special education students. He also shared plans for the Night of Champions at an upcoming football game to recognized state champions in any NSAA sport from past years.
Principals and Curriculum Director Valorie Foy presented information on the state writing test. Diane Bruha told about procedures for special education students as well as those for regular students. Kim Jacobson talked about the topics used last year. Fourth graders write a narrative essay. Eighth graders write a descriptive essay and eleventh graders write a persuasive essay. Bret Schroder talked about the test scoring. Scorers use a rubric for each of the six characteristics to score the test. Each test is scored by two readers with a third reader scoring the writing sample if the first two do not agree. Valorie Foy went through the results for the writing tests done last spring. 88.29% of fourth graders, 89.29% of eighth graders, and 89.62% of eleventh graders achieved mastery. Of the 86 eleventh graders who were here since taking the test in eighth grade 85 or 98% passed the test.
Kyle McGowan reviewed the organizational chart for the year.
The Board was notified that a new subdivision is proposed on the east edge of Crete for 40 lots. Mr. McGowan also reported that the city has written a Safe Route to School Grant. This grant would pay for sidewalks on streets around the high school.
Motion #102-07 Laura Ebke moved to approve the request of the FBLA to attend the National Fall Leadership Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 9-10, 2007. Tom King seconded the motion. On roll call: Voting Aye: Isernhagen, Ebke, Buser, King, Lorenz. Voting Nay: None. Absent: Hanson. Motion carried: 5-0.
Motion #103-07 Laura Ebke moved to approve the Budget of Expenditures for the 2007-08 school year. Kim Buser seconded the motion. On roll call: Voting Aye: Isernhagen, Ebke, Buser, King, Lorenz. Voting Nay: None. Absent: Hanson. Motion carried: 5-0.
Motion #104-07 Laura Ebke moved to approve the District’s membership in the Greater Nebraska Schools Association for 2007-08. Dennis Isernhagen seconded the motion. On roll call: Voting Aye: Isernhagen, Ebke, Buser, King, Lorenz. Voting Nay: None. Absent: Hanson. Motion carried: 5-0.
