SCIENCE 8/MRS.
BANKS' GRADING POLICY
Definitions:
Formative:
assignments designed to introduce information to students.
Examples
of formative assignments include but are not limited to: some
quizzes, initial drafts/attempts, homework such as vocabulary words
and study guides, and some labs.
Summative:
assessment designed to provide information about a student’s
achievement at the end of a period of instruction. Examples
include, but are not limited to: projects, tests, exams, final
drafts, some homework, and some labs.
Completion
Grade: a quick check at the time a formative assignment is
due to see
if a student has attempted and/or completed the work.
Grading:
Formative
Assignments
will generally be worth 5-30 points, and will account for 30% of
the grading period score. Some formative assignments will be
graded for completion, and will not be eligible for a score
of “Incomplete.” “Completion” assignments with be worth 5 points
per page:
Score
for complete and well done work = 5 points per page
Score
for incomplete or insufficient work = 4 or 3 points per page
Score
if over ½ of the assignment is not completed = 2, 1, or 0 points
per page)
Summative
Assignments
will generally be worth 50-150 points, and will account for 70% of
the grading period score.
Grade Calculation Example
Period 1 Formative Scores:
Period
1 Summative Scores:
5/5, 8/10, 7/9, 25/30,
55/60,
95/100, 72/75, 91/95,
6/10, 28/30
92/100,
148/150
Total Points: 79/94 = 84%
Total
Points: 553/580 = 95%
Grade Average:
(84% x 30%) + (95% x 70%) =
(0.84 x 0.30) + (0.95 x 0.70) = (0.252 + 0.665) = 0.917 = 91.7% (B+)
Incomplete Work
An “I” will be recorded in the grade book for any unfinished
or unsubmitted formative work that is graded for content (rather
than completion). An “I” will also be recorded for any unfinished
or unsubmitted summative work.
After-school time in the Extended Study Room (ESR) will be
assigned to those students who need to finish work. The “I” will
remain in the grade book until the work is completed. An “I” will
result in an “Incomplete” for the grading period. If the work is
not completed within a time frame arranged with Mrs. Banks, the “I”
may change to an “F.”
